The huge temple bell (kane) that is rung 108 times as the New Year begins
celebrations at a local shrine mark the start of the Year of the Horse
Many older households have a Butstudan, a miniature shrine
At my girflriend's parent's house, all of the traditional foods were served up, including Mochi (sticky rice), Osechi ryori and fish eggs
