Do
you remember a few years ago we managed to get all supermarkets
(starting with Iceland) to stop using GM ingredients in their
own brand food? Who would have thought it possible, but we did
it! Consumer power really does work. I recently attended a meeting
held by the Patrick Holden of the Soil Association. He told us
how when in conversation with the chief executive of Tesco last
year, he was told that it takes surprisingly few letters to arrive
at head office for a matter to be raised at the board meeting.
So come on, let's get writing and phoning!
The
most powerful action you can take is to WRITE to your local supermarket.
Tell them that if the government goes ahead with allowing GM crops
to be grown commercially, you will ONLY shop with them if they
can GUARANTEE that their food is GM Free. Bear in mind that the
supermarkets won't be able to do this: therefore if you put pressure
on the supermarkets, they'll put pressure on the government. Use
the arguments as given here.

If
you don't like writing letters:
Ring
the customer care line of your local supermarket, telling them;
1)
that you buy organic food from them and would like to be able
to buy UK produced organic food whenever possible.
2)
that you are worried that if commercial planting of GM crops goes
ahead in the UK, all farms will be contaminated by GM and you
will not be able to buy uncontaminated British food even if it
is organic food.
3)
ask the supermarket what they are going to do to make sure that
this doesn't happen.
KEEP
MILK GM-FREE
New GM labelling regulations
will not apply to meat products from animals fed on GM animal
feed. You will have no idea whether the milk you are drinking
has come from an animal fed GMOs - unless it is organic milk.
If this concerns you,
please contact the four main UK dairies today and tell them your
concerns. Links to contact forms below:
1 Tell them your concerns.
2 Ask them to guarantee they will source GM-free animal feed.
